What makes World of Warcraft so great is the infinite number of ways you can level up your character. With the introduction of Cataclysm, there are now over 65 different leveling areas in WoW! With so many places to choose from to quest and level up, how do you go about choosing the best areas to level your toon?
Your First Few Levels
The first 12 to 14 levels (20-22 if leveling a Draenei or Blood Elf) will be spent in your race’s starting area. During these levels you will learn the basic routine of playing your class as a damage-dealing role.
Your Next Few Levels
After you’ve completed your starting area quests, you can visit the closest city and pick up a quest to send you to the next area. For Alliance this will be Loch Modan, Westfall or Darkshore. For Horde: Silverpine Forest, Azshara, or Northern Barrens.
When To Find A New Leveling Area
Higher level quests and monsters will yield more XP. Especially if you’re using the dungeon finder, you’ll find that you will quickly out-level the areas you are questing in. When all your quests have turned green, finding a higher level area to quest in will help keep your XP bar moving fast (and provide better gear).
What Makes A Great Place to Level
The best way to level up quickly is to find an area where the quests and monsters are yellow, meaning they are close in level to you. Ideally it isn’t a long flight away from a major city, where you can set your hearthstone to quickly return when needed. If you have a gathering profession, pick a place where there are level-appropriate herbs/ore/leather to be gathered that can help level up your profession.
If You’re Having Trouble, Go Green
If you are dying a lot while doing yellow quests, doing green quests is the way to go. This will help you get some more gear (and practice). Plus, you will spend less time dying and more time killing monsters. The only secret to power leveling is to constantly be questing and killing monsters for XP. If you do this, you will level up very quickly!
